James M. Buchanan (1919-2013), American economist. His major works include The Calculus of Consent (1962, with Gordon Tullock), Cost and Choice: An Inquiry in Economic Theory (1969), and The Demand and Supply of Public Goods (1968, with Richard E. Wagner). His fields of specialization were public choice theory, constitutional economics, political economy, fiscal federalism, and economic theory.
